Guys Tips

10 rules for wearing glasses that every man should know...

Depending where in the world you call home, there are certain rules that should be adhered to when it comes to the general etiquette of wearing sunglasses and clear lens frames. ToyShades have put together the essential rules for you guys out there...

(i). Indoors or at night?

If you’re not wearing your shades alfresco, you’ve probably got about a 30-second window before everyone thinks you’re a complete tool. So, no wearing sunglasses at night... that is unless of course you are wearing ToyShades clear lens frames. They are the perfect companion for an evening on the tiles...

(ii). Size matters

Big glasses are proper glam, but strike a balance between your style and what you can pull off. Big frames or statement pieces for the weekend, more subtle and understated shapes for the office or throughout the week...

(iii). Perv check

Covertly checking the ladies out is one of the great joys of summer. But double-check the opacity of your eyewear beforehand... especially if you have a girlfriend!

(iv). Round face

North Korean moon-face Kim Jong-il was an expert at matching sunnies with face-shape, donning square frames to angulate his pudgy features. Squarer frames sharpen pudgy features

(v). Mirrored lenses

It is very disconcerting talking to someone in mirrored specs only to see your own mug staring back at you... big no-no unless you are somewhere no interaction is required (raves...!)

(vi). Match glasses and garms

Match the colour of your frames with your shoes / tie / pocket-square; keep it subtle and you will look the money.

(vii). On top of your head?

A real opinion divider. If you’re wearing them as some sort of weird, posy UV protecting tiara, then no. If it’s because you don’t own pockets, yes. But who doesn't own pockets in 2013? Also remember wearing them on your head can affect hinges and frame shape.

(viii). Upside down?

Don’t ever wear your glasses upside down, you’ll look like snooker player Dennis Taylor.

(ix). On trend

Retro, as opposed to the techy ’90s styles, are this year's main attraction. Tortoiseshell and black are timeless winners as are smaller frames. Always - If in doubt, go retro-relevant.

(x). Save your sunnies

Never ditch your frames. You’re pretty much guaranteed that the style will come around every 10 years or so, so it’s good to play the long game.
